Can South Carolina 3-Peat: SEC Tourney Starts Road to Omaha
The SEC Tournament is the launchpad for NCAA Baseball Champs.
South Carolina returns to Hoover Stadium in Birmingham facing the impossible. Can the Gamecocks survive the SEC Tourney then three-peat in Omaha?
The SEC tourney starts a day earlier, Tuesday, grows from eight to 10 teams, and is now single elimination.
Alabama and Tennessee did not make the field. Texas A&M and Missouri join the fray next year.
Ole Miss and Auburn are the 9th and 10th seeds instead of watching from home beause of the new, larger format.
Two-time defending Natl Champ South Carolina is the #2 seed -- not the Tourney's top seed. LSU is. Preseason #1 in the nation, Florida, is the 3rd seed.
LSU coach Paul Mainieri told the Birmingham News, "Nobody really likes the idea of single elimination. But given that option versus wearing out a pitching staff (before next week's NCAA Tournament), that's the best decision.""
Tuesday's Schedule: Kentucky-Ole Miss 9:30a followed by Arkansas-Miss St. at 4:30 Florida faces Auburn, then Vandy-Georgia.
